Description

This 1999 SSR-G model is well optioned, reliable, safe, and shares a powerplant with our American version, making parts and service as easy as it gets. Just before we entered the current millennium, Toyota was cranking out the hits at a record pace. The brand’s midsize SUV offering, the Hilux Surf, was dominating the Japanese market, and domestically, the 4Runner was selling in droves. This 1999 SSR-G model is well optioned, reliable, safe, and shares a powerplant with our American version, making parts and service as easy as it gets. Finished in a fresh coat of Desert Khaki (86Q), this 4WD ex

ample is set off by a rare factory brushguard, wide refinished 16′′ alloy wheels, OEM rainguards, and an aggressive factory rear spoiler. Aside from noting a hatch replacement in Japan and a few minor imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this terrific Toyota is fresh off a recent service, and has logged only 67k verified and documented miles on the clock. Easy on the eyes, capable, and built like a tank, this Japanese Classic is the full package. This Surf features a simple and spacious cabin. It includes a few OEM and aftermarket upgrades. Examples of which include a BOSS audio headunit upgrade. Complete with Bluetooth and American FM radio stations, this unit represents a significant upgrade over the factory-installed model. The dashboard is in great shape and lacks any cracking or fading. Dual SRS airbags are standard, and the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The optional backlit gauge pod is easy to read and located by the map lights is an optional OEM field monitor. It displays a wealth of information about the outside conditions in case you lose cell service. Power back glass, electric windows, power locks, and power folding side mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The automatic digital climate system boasts piping hot heat and cold air conditioning. The rear power under mirror is a bit over the top. When reversing the Hilux, it drops down from the spoiler to display a view of any obstructions that may be blocking the rear bumper. The tan upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Rear occupants can find the ideal seating position courtesy of reclining seat backs, which weren’t offered on our 4Runners. The rear seats also split fold, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor for larger cargo accommodations. The soft plastics, door cards, and headliner have resisted major abuse over the years, and even the owner’s manual and OEM carpeted floor mats are included with the purchase of the vehicle. Aside from a non-functional moonroof, it’s an absolute gem. Above average in almost every respect, it’s clear from the cockpit condition that the old owner really cared for this thing. The 5VZ-FE is a thing of beauty. The V6 that powers this rig was sold in the States and regularly eclipses half a million miles. This one is fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L kicks to life courtesy of a new 12V battery. It sounds decent, too, as we replaced the muffler with a new one. A new fuel filter, new spark plugs, and a new engine air filter maximize power, and the quad cam mill has been refreshed with new valve cover gaskets. While we were in there, we also replaced the cam plugs and resealed the half moons. It sends power through a tough automatic gearbox that shifts like it should. The driver can select between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locker and low range are on hand for any off-road escapades. It gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat and slows down promptly when called upon with its standard anti-lock braking system. New front rotors and pads were installed while up on the lift. To polish off this impressive Hilux, a new Eibach 2′′ inverted lift kit replaces the tired old OEM suspension. The improved ride is noticeable and feels connected and predictable for an SUV. The power steering is direct and on point, and we have freshly aligned this Hilux and installed new front sway bar links and bushings to ensure handling stays tight and tidy. The wide 16′′ wheels are wrapped in brand new 33′′ Falken rubber. Turn key and ready to roll, this big beauty is a delight to motor!
