Description

Equipped with more factory options and upgrades than you can shake a stick at, this direct-injected turbodiesel Surf is a sweet example of the platform Years of specializing in the Hilux Surf model has given us the unique opportunity to build trucks that are visually exciting, mechanically engaging, and turn-key ready to do some serious duty stateside. Equipped with more factory options and upgrades than you can shake a stick at, this direct-injected turbodiesel Surf is one sweet example, fashioned in a fresh coat of Plum Crazy (FGG/PHG) paint. Set off by an OEM front bumper protector, an opti

onal rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, OEM spare tire swingarm, and multipiece WEDS adventure alloys, this 2000 SSR-X is a hot prospect, and boasts just 113k verified/documented miles on the clock. Save for a few minor paint blemishes, and a noted replacement of the front left fender, this stout SUV should please most any enthusiast, and with a comprehensive recent service done, you can put this 1KD just about anywhere. Unique, unkillable, and special both on and off-pavement, it goes without saying this Hilux Surf is a real deal Japanese Classic! Despite its outlandish exterior, the interior is understated, comfortable, and practical. It’s fashioned in a durable cloth and was clearly well cared for in a prior life. The tan upholstery is soft to the touch and shows no discernible defects apart from some wear to the driver’s bolster. The matching vinyl dash shows no discernible defects, or cracks, although it is peeling next to the glovebox and atop the gauge hood, which are common areas for 3rd generation models. Toyota revamped the center stack, with a redesigned digital automatic climate control display, and more functional cupholders. This Surf also boasts a period correct Pioneer audio upgrade. Power windows, locks, and electric mirrors are on hand too, to assist daily use. Cold A/C and hot heat work like a charm, but when natural ventilation takes priority, the rear glass can unfurl too, with the push of a button. The rear bench is versatile, folds flat should you need to lug around extra cargo, and the seat backs recline slightly for optimal passenger comfort. Overall, it’s hard to nitpick the cabin as it was cared for extremely well overseas, and we’ve retained the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet on this truck to help the next owner protect their investment. The 1KD-FTV under the hood is a modernized version of the fan-favorite 1KZ-TE, and after retailing quite a few, we believe this powerplant has tons of staying power. It’s intercooled, for additional reliability, and it’s direct injected to boost both power and fuel economy. This one went up on the lift and under the knife for a full service, and is fresh off an oil and filter change. We went ahead and installed a new valve cover gasket so the oil stays internal, and flushed out some old coolant too. It cranks over with haste, care of a new 12v battery, and we installed a new engine air filter and fuel filter to keep contaminants out of the 3.0. An aftermarket exhaust lets out a bit of growl, the powerband is impressive, and the 3.0 TD has enough grunt to fly around left lane campers on the interstate. An automatic gearbox commands shifts, and power is thrown rearward. We performed some hefty rehab on the drivetrain, including an all new Eibach lift kit that gives you a couple inches of ground clearance too! From there, we installed all new front lower control arms, which included a set of new front lower ball joints for good measure. We also replaced the rear lower control arms while we were in there. To shore up the steering system, we rebuilt the rack with all new seals. Upon reassembly, we installed new inner and outer tie rods, bellows boots, and flushed new fluid into the system. The ABS brakes bite hard, and have no issues slowing this behemoth down. The WEDS wheels are wrapped in brand new 33′′ Falken tires, and to ensure you track dead straight, we’ve performed a fresh four wheel alignment here at the shop!
