For over 35 years, the Celica nameplate represented sportiness, reliability, and stylishness. For 1999, the vehicle was poised to enter its final generation, and boy did it go out with a bang! Aggressive angular styling, a revised chassis, and new powerplant all worked in combination to create a top-tier driving experience. ece rainguards and a subtle factory rear wing. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and dings the paint in in good shape and this coupe is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a mere 29k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. Powered by a revvy four-banger sending torque through a communicative six-speed, this front-drive Japanese Classic would be a cool commuter, affordable autocross all-star, or wicked weekend whip. The interior looks quite modern thanks to a swept dash, digital gauge display, and modern switchgear. Functional keyless entry makes cabin entry much easier, especially when your hands are full of groceries. The driver hunkers down in the cockpit and can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column. The dashboard lacks any major cracking or fading and dual SRS airbags are standard for those riding up front. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. For those who want to supplement the 2ZZ soundtrack under the hood with some jams, a trick OEM head unit looks and sounds decent. The center stack includes an automatic climate control system that fills the cabin with heat of functional A/C when required. The seats are trimmed in a durable gray sport mesh cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are comfortable on longer hauls. The headliner is in good shape, as are the door cards, which are accented with dark gray leather. The carpets have faired well too, and the OEM carpet mats are included with the purchase. The liftback opens wide to gobble up cargo and the rear seats fold down for additional space. Tidy, clean, and well cared for this interior is about as good as it gets! This new chassis was sharper than the one it replaced and the Yamaha-designed 1.8L is a lively power unit. Fresh off an oil and filter service the 2ZZ-GE churns to life care of a new 12v battery. The 1.8 is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox that powers the front wheels. It’s a communicative transmission and lacks any grinds or hitches. The TRD knob feels perfect in the palm of your left hand, too. The throttle response is fabulous and the 2ZZ sings all the way to redline. The handling is superb for a FWD car, and the Celica pulls itself through the turns with the best of them. The light curbweight keeps stopping distances short, and this SS-II model includes standard ABS. One of our trained techs has replaced the front brake pads with new ones to improve braking performance. The power steering is light yet communicative and the refinished OEM alloys are wrapped in brand new rubber. The new tires reduce road noise, improve grip, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
