Description

Rare, durable, and unique, these Land Cruisers don't come around often, and this example is turn-key ready to go to a true Toyota nut. The 70 series is a breath of fresh air in today’s market. New SUV’s and pickups are more than double the price, jam packed with unnecessary fluff, and are a whole lot less dependable as it turns out. This 1998 HZJ77 is a real classic, boasting a determined diesel drivetrain, a real-deal body-on-frame construction, and a legendary 4WD system that could survive the apocalypse. Above all else, it’s a clean truck overall, and the Emerald Green/Silver (26Z) paintwor

k is in above average shape. Iconic round headlamps and blister fenders set off the aesthetic, and OEM rainguards complete the look. Refinished 16′′ bullethole style alloys are a fine complement to the two-tone bodywork, and save for some minor paint chips and age-related imperfections, the chassis of this Cruiser is in good shape overall. Best of all, the 74k miles on the clock are verified and documented, which we’d consider barely broken in for any classic ‘Yota. Rare, durable, and unique, these Land Cruisers don’t come around often, and this example is turn-key ready to go to a true Toyota nut. Clean, capable, and collectible, this 70 series is a bonafide Japanese Classic! For a chassis designed in the early 80’s, it’s shocking how well the interior has held up in both fit and finish. This HDJ77 still has all the creature comforts and power equipment necessary for daily driving, and the driver assumes a commanding position over the steering wheel. Visibility is also top-tier, and this Cruiser scoffs at the idea of a blind spot. The dash is trimmed in a durable gray plastic. Utilitarian in design, yet in great shape overall, there are no unwanted cracks or defects to be found, and the same quality extends to the center stack, steering wheel, and other touch points. The seats are upholstered in a durable multicolor cloth, free of any rips, stains, or damage aside from some pilling on the driver’s seat bottom. The material is mirrored in the door cards, and our pickiest clients will be pleased to notice the headliner and carpets are in above-average shape as well. It makes sense given the mileage of the vehicle, but the power amenities all function as advertised, and the driver can command control of the power windows, locks, and mirrors as needed. Even the factory moonroof slides and tilts with urgency. To adjust the climate inside, an easy to use climate control system doles out cold A/C and hot heat without issue, and an adjacent Sony headunit gets some tunes going. This 70 series has plenty of cargo capacity, and the middle row can tumble forward to maximize the amount of usable space. If you’re lugging around passengers, it also reclines if they want to catch some Z’s on a road trip. We hate speaking with bias here, but this cabin really impresses. It’s well equipped, clean, and we even retained the owner’s manual and maintenance booklets to help preserve this Cruiser’s history! The 1HZ under the hood is a special powerplant for a special truck, and enthusiasts know this 4.2 I6 punches above its weight class in terms of driving dynamics and longevity. It’s smooth, easy to service, and fresh off a recent service by our trained technicians. It cranks over with haste, care of 2 new batteries to bolster the 24v charging system, and a fresh oil and filter service keeps this HZ chugging along at idle. New serpentine belts drive your accessories reliably, and we replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter for a bit of a preemptive tune up. With the maintenance performed, this delightful diesel gets up to speed just fine, and power is delivered to a selective transfercase via a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. 4WD is on the ready when needed, and a front and rear differential locker work like a charm to help propel you up a rocky trail. For a bit of drivetrain rehab, both front hubs were rebuilt with new bearings and seals, and we installed new front brake pads to assist stopping power. The 16-inch wheels are handsome, freshly refinished, and wrapped in beefy 31′′ Falken all-terrain rubber. To make the most of the new shoes, we gave this HZJ77 a fresh alignment, and it’s ready to tackle dirt, sand, or the winter snow with ease!
