Running tip top, the four-banger is linked to a stout automatic transmission. The Surf hustles up to highway speeds with ease, and gear shifts are executed properly. The pilot can select 4WD on the fly, and if acceleration and fuel economy are of importance, driving in RWD is the ticket. For off-road excursions, a low-range 4WD can be engaged as well. If you need to slow down, this SUV has you covered. New rear brake shoes and new front brake pads keep stopping distances short. The Rancho suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse without breaking a sweat. The power steering is light yet direct and has been improved with a steering damper and a rebuilt power steering pump. After installing new inner and outer front tie rods to dial in an alignment, we mounted and balanced four new 30′′ Falken tires.
