About the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a turbocharged AWD four-door sedan produced from 1992 to 2016 across ten numbered generations, each carrying a purpose-built rally-homologation specification distinct from the standard Lancer sedan's naturally-aspirated, front-wheel-drive architecture. Generations I through III (CD9A/CE9A, 1992-1996) share a platform derived from the base Lancer but with the 4G63T AWD drivetrain sourced partly from the Galant. The fourth generation shifted to the CN9A platform (1996-1998), followed by the wider-track CP9A for Evos V and VI (1998-2001). Evos VII, VIII, and IX share the CT9A platform (2001-2007), with a wagon variant (CT9W) offered on the IX in JDM markets. The Evo X (CZ4A, 2007-2016) was the longest-running generation and the last before production ended in May 2016. Production volumes were intentionally limited relative to the base Lancer; WRC homologation requirements drove development across most generations.
The 4G63T 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder carried through Evos I to IX, with output cited at 244ps on the Evo I, 270ps on the Evo III, and the JDM gentlemen's agreement figure of 280ps on Evos IV through VIII. The Evo IX added MIVEC variable valve timing to the 4G63T. The Evo X (CZ4A) replaced it with the 4B11T 2.0L aluminum-block turbocharged unit. AWD is standard across all generations; Active Yaw Control (AYC) at the rear differential arrived with the CN9A Evo IV (on GSR and select RS trims), and Active Centre Differential (ACD) was added from the CT9A Evo VII onward. RS trim across generations deletes comfort equipment for a lighter specification with steel wheels; GSR carries Recaro seats, Momo wheel, and alloy wheels. The Evo VI CP9A produced a Tommi Mäkinen Edition (TME) variant with revised steering, a unique turbocharger setup, and special exterior treatment. The UK-market FQ-400 trim on the Evo VIII was factory-rated at 405hp. The Evo X introduced the TC-SST twin-clutch dual-clutch transmission on MR trim; the GSR retained a five-speed manual, and a JDM RS trim offered a lighter specification with the 5MT.
All Evo I-IX generations are right-hand drive; LHD was not available until the Evo VIII (2003), the first generation sold new in the United States. Under the US 25-year import rule, Evo I (1992-1994, CD9A) has been eligible since 2017; Evo II (CE9A, 1994) since 2019; Evo III (CE9A, 1995) since 2020; Evo IV (CN9A, 1996-1998) since 2021-2023; Evo V (CP9A, 1998-1999) since 2023-2024; Evo VI (CP9A, 1999-2001) from 2024 onward; Evo VII (CT9A, 2001-2003) from 2026 onward. Evo VIII, IX, and X were sold through US dealers and need no import qualification for USDM examples. Pre-purchase inspection priorities documented in the reference data include: timing belt service history and tensioner condition on all 4G63T cars (Evos I-IX); timing chain and cam phaser noise on the 4B11T (Evo X); AYC pump condition and hydraulic line rust on any generation with AYC fitted; underbody rust at pinch welds, rear subframe mounts, and floor seams; and AYC/ACD fault code scanning before purchase. SST mechatronic service history is a separate inspection point on Evo X MR examples.
