Quick answer

The Land Cruiser Prado is Toyota's lighter Land Cruiser wagon line, split from the Land Cruiser 70 in April 1990. Japan's catalogue shows four generations: J70 (1990 to 1996), J90 (1996 to 2002), J120 (2002 to 2009) and J150 (2009 to 2024). Engines, gearboxes and grades changed by date, so check each car against its own generation page.

Background

Overview

The Land Cruiser Prado is Toyota's lighter Land Cruiser wagon line, split from the Land Cruiser 70 in April 1990. Japan's catalogue shows four generations, from the J70 (April 1990 to May 1996) to the J150 (September 2009 to April 2024). Each generation page has its dated engines, grades and import rules.

How the Japanese generations differ

The J70 is a part-time 4WD turbo-diesel wagon with the 2L-TE and then, from May 1993, the 1KZ-TE. The J90 changed to full-time 4WD, independent front suspension and a 3.4-litre V6, added a 2.7-litre petrol four in April 1997 and swapped the 1KZ-TE for the common-rail 1KD-FTV on 31 July 2000. The J120 added a Torsen centre differential and a four-speed automatic on every launch grade, with the 4.0-litre 1GR-FE on sale from 5 August 2005. The J150 launched petrol-only in Japan, gained the 1GD-FTV diesel on 17 June 2015 and was re-rated to 204 PS in August 2020.

Import age is counted per car

The US federal age exemption applies to a vehicle 25 or more years old, counted from the individual car's date of manufacture (49 CFR 591.5(i)), so there is no single cut-off year for a generation. Canada's threshold is 15 years, counted by manufacture month and year. EPA is separate: its age exemption counts at least 21 years from the calendar year of manufacture to the year of importation and requires the original unmodified configuration, with engine equivalence meaning the same model and configuration as the original. EPA's published overview also describes a restricted exception for equivalent or newer EPA-certified engines with their emission-control systems, so confirm the actual replacement configuration with EPA before you buy. Customs entry and state or provincial registration are separate.

Key takeaways

  • Japan's catalogue lists four generations: J70 (April 1990 to May 1996), J90 (to October 2002), J120 (to September 2009) and J150 (to April 2024).
  • In April 1990 Toyota gave the wagon the Prado sub-name and split it from the heavy-duty Land Cruiser 70.
  • Four-wheel drive was part-time on the J70, full-time from the J90, and gained a Torsen centre differential on the J120.
  • The 1KD-FTV replaced the 1KZ-TE on 31 July 2000, and the J150 diesel (1GD-FTV) arrived on 17 June 2015.
  • US import age is counted from each car's own manufacture date, so use its documented build date.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the Prado's Japanese generations and years?
Toyota's Japanese catalogue lists four: April 1990 to May 1996 (J70), May 1996 to October 2002 (J90), October 2002 to September 2009 (J120) and September 2009 to April 2024 (J150). Those are model-availability periods, not build dates.
Is a Prado the same as a Land Cruiser 70?
No. In April 1990 Toyota gave the wagon the Prado sub-name and split it from the Land Cruiser 70 line. The heavy-duty utility wagon, with 1PZ and 1HZ engines, stayed a Land Cruiser 70.
When did the Prado's engines change?
J70: 2L-TE diesel, replaced by the 1KZ-TE in May 1993. J90: 1KD-FTV replaced the 1KZ-TE on 31 July 2000. J120: 2TR-FE in 2004, 1GR-FE on 5 August 2005. J150: 1GD-FTV diesel on 17 June 2015, re-rated to 204 PS in August 2020.
Which Prado generation can I import to the US?
That depends on each car's manufacture date, not its generation: the US exemption needs a vehicle 25 or more years old, counted from the car's documented build date. EPA rules and state registration are separate.
What does the catalogue period mean?
It is the span Toyota's Japanese catalogue lists a model as available. It is not proof of the first or last build month, so use the car's own documented manufacture date for age and its own papers for specification.
