Where the standard Wagon R was engineered to stay within Japan’s strict kei dimensions, the Plus version exceeded them to offer a wider body, a larger engine, and more interior space. This example has the 4 cylinder K10A in turbocharged specification, producing 99 HP at 6,500 rpm and 122 Nm at 3,000 rpm. The base K10A produces 69HP naturally aspirated. The turbo version is the one worth having in a car this light, and the difference is clear in how it pulls from low rpm. The interior rewards attention. The storage bucket under the front seat is a factory feature, a small compartment accessible while seated. The lap timer built into the instrument cluster is a genuine factory installation, not an aftermarket addition. Addzest ADX5455 head unit with CD changer. All seats fold completely flat, front and rear (exept driver). OEM hood scoop feeds the intercooler. OEM rear roof spoiler. Retractable mirrors. Fog lights. All electric windows. Front and rear bench seats rather than individual buckets give more flexibility. Driver and passenger airbags. Power steering. Mileage: 69,720 miles (112,175 km). Interesting Facts The K10A engine family used in this car was developed specifically for the Wagon R+, as the car exceeded kei specifications and could accommodate a larger displacement. The same basic K10A block was later used in the European Wagon R Plus in naturally aspirated form. The turbocharged K10A variant with 99HP was available only on the top-spec Japanese domestic models. Addzest was Pioneer’s premium Japanese domestic market audio brand, sold exclusively through Japanese dealerships during this period. The ADX5455 was positioned at the top of their aftermarket lineup. Unlike standard Pioneer units sold globally, Addzest products were engineered specifically for the Japanese market and are not commonly encountered outside of JDM imports. The Wagon R+ body width of 1,620mm placed it outside Japan’s kei car width limit of 1,480mm. This meant it did not qualify for the tax advantages and parking privileges that kei cars receive in Japan, positioning it as a different product for a buyer willing to pay slightly more for the additional space. About Us We’ve been working with Japanese vehicles for over 25 years. Long before opening our location in the United States, our team was importing and servicing these vehicles in Europe when many of them were still new. Because of that experience, we know these platforms extremely well. Every model has its own weak points, and we inspect and address them before the vehicle is offered for sale. All vehicles are serviced at our facility in Japan before shipping. Fluids, belts, filters, batteries, and common failure points are inspected and replaced when necessary. Unlike many dealerships, we actually drive our vehicles. They don’t sit in a parking lot. Our trucks and cars are used regularly so we can verify reliability before they reach their new owner. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle that is fully prepared and ready to drive from day one. JP-TRADE is our first location in the United States, supported by a team of more than 40 people across Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S. If you made it this far, here is a little bonus for you. Why did Suzuki build a version of the Wagon R+ that deliberately broke the kei car rules? The kei car regulations in Japan come with real benefits: lower taxes, cheaper insurance, and parking privileges in cities where space is measured in centimeters. Staying within the rules matters to most buyers. Suzuki built the Wagon R+ for the buyer who wanted the tall-body formula but did not need the kei advantages, perhaps because they lived rurally, or because they simply wanted more width and a bigger engine without moving up to a full-size car. The car exists in a gap between categories that most manufacturers did not bother filling. Suzuki filled it anyway, briefly, and produced something that is genuinely unusual on both sides of the Pacific.
