ion is set off by OEM rainguards, polished OEM alloys, and a subtle rear spoiler. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good shape, and looks cherry compared to some tired Lexus’ we see here stateside. Better yet, this luxury sedan boasts 69k verified miles on the clock, and is ideal for those looking to drive something daily. Dependable, handsome, and easy to turn a wrench on, the reasons why we love these Japanese Classics are nearly endless! Toyota was on the top of their interior design game during the late ’90s. This JZS160’s cabin styling has aged gracefully, and the two-tone Vertex cloth interior is highly desired for its resistance to normal age-related wear and tear. For those who value safety, Toyota made ABS brakes standard for this model and the same can be said for dual front and side SRS airbags. The driver benefits from an electric tilt and telescoping steering column, and both front chairs are power adjustable too. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the center stack is close by and within reach. The digital dual zone climate control system is easy to operate and cold A/C or piping hot heat can be utilized for those living in seasonal climates. OEM audio is integrated into the touchscreen and delivers a soundtrack to complement your commute. The cloth upholstery has resisted any major wear and tear, and matching material is mirrored in the door cards. The headliner is in good shape, too, as are the carpets which have been protected by a plush set of OEM mats. Power folding mirrors, keyless entry, power locks, and power windows all function in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. There’s even a power moonroof, which works like a charm. All in all, we find little to gripe about with this Aristo’s condition. Under the bonnet, US enthusiasts will be pleased to see the 2JZ-GE is the same easily serviceable powerplant spec’d in stateside Toyota and Lexus offerings. A reliable, fuel-efficient mill, this one is fresh off a recent tune up in-house, including an extensive timing belt and water pump service. While the front cover was apart, new camshaft seals were installed, and a new valve cover gasket seals up any unwanted oil leaks. The motor fires up swiftly with the twist of a key, thanks to a new 12v battery, which was also installed to properly test the alternator. A fresh oil and filter service keeps this one well lubricated until its next maintenance cycle, and she runs and drives butter smooth thanks to six new spark plugs. Compared to its bigger, twin turbocharged brother, the GE has plenty of get up and go around town, and acceleration on the highway is substantial as well. The automatic box shifts smoothly up and down the gears without hesitation, as power is hammered down to the rear wheels. The suspension is soft, and compliant too, as we replaced the front and rear upper control arms with new units. We also replaced the front caster arms so this Aristo would pass its state inspection with flying colors. The power steering is light and direct, as you’d expect from a luxury sedan, and the ABS brakes chomp down hard with new pads and rotors up front. Save for a slight chirp from the brake booster, the drivetrain is in tip top shape, and to sweeten the deal, we’ve mounted and balanced new all-season tires at all four corners and given this Aristo a fresh alignment to get it ready for tens of thousands of reliable miles ahead!
