Launched globally in 1991, the second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero (called Montero in America) received a streamlined exterior design and a more refined interior in a bid to challenge the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Nissan Patrol. Japanese-spec SUVs could be ordered as a basic work truck, a fully-loaded adventure machine, or nearly any configuration in between. Short- and long-wheelbase versions of the Pajero were sold until 1999.
Power comes from a “4D56T” 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-4, rated at approximately 99 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 2-speed transfer case with a locking center differential.
