The introduction of the Mazda MX5 Miata in the early 1990’s revolutionized the sport compact world as we know it today. Enthusiasts no longer had to empty their pockets to purchase and service expensive European roadsters, instead Mazda provided a budget friendly, reliable alternative that was just as well equipped and competitive on track. The MX5 has long been heralded as the most popular budget sports car to have, and with over a million units sold, the enthusiast community is nothing short of gigantic. The first generation “NA” chassis is undoubtedly Mazda’s most iconic and is currently the only generation eligible to import from overseas under the 25-year rule. With many North American market examples falling victim to rust and corrosion it’s become increasingly difficult to find a clean chassis stateside. This is where the Japanese market comes in. These JDM “Eunos Roadsters” tend to have lower mileage and cleaner bodies than most USDM Miatas and come with some choice JDM specific features. This particular 1990 model year “NA6” Eunos Roadster is a nicely modified example optioned from the factory with Mazda’s durable 1.6l four-cylinder powerplant and 4 Speed automatic transmission. With only 107,982 original km on the chassis (67,096 verified miles!) this roadster is a clean find and will undoubtedly serve the next owner well for years to come. Finished from the factory in Mariner Blue (DU) with black soft top over black cloth interior, this Roadster has since undergone some bodywork according to records from Japan and a full respray in a custom metallic blue finish. The exterior on this one is in fantastic shape for a 32-year-old vehicle and is free of any major dents and dings and corrosion. A few choice modifications have been made to enhance the look of the exterior. Matching front, rear, and side lips flow nicely with the stock body lines and ZOOM headlight covers turn the factory headlamps into cooling vents when retracted. The rear end is accentuated by a factory wing and luggage rack, and a set of 15 inch “Grass HN” 5 spoke wheels are an appropriate upgrade over the stock alloys. The interior is just as clean as you’d expect. The factory black cloth upholstery shows no rips, tears, or even bolster wear. All interior materials have held up exceptionally well and the dash only shows some light signs of sun fading. A few interior upgrades enhance the driving experience. An iconic 3 spoke Nardi steering wheel replaces the factory unit, and the original clunky automatic gear selector is masked by a sleek blue shift knob with leather boot. Finding a NA Roadster interior this clean is a rare sight, and we’re sure the next owner will appreciate the condition of this one. The 1.6l 4-cylinder powerplant fires right up and idles smoothly. You wouldn’t expect 113 hp to be so exhilarating, but in this lightweight chassis, it’s a suitable amount. The motor is free of any and all unnecessary aftermarket modification. Only an OE Mazdaspeed exhaust was equipped to bring a little tone out from that 4 banger. In mechanically stock form, this car is a real treat. Take all the fun of a Miata, throw the steering wheel on the right, and you have a recipe for some serious driving pleasure. The motor revs happily throughout the rev range with no hiccups or hesitations. The 4-speed automatic transmission takes to performance driving surprisingly well and is a great option for those looking to daily this roadster or take it on long road trips! This car makes quick work of backroad twists and turns thanks to a set of Cusco coilovers. Maintenance stickers on the engine indicate frequent oil changes and a timing belt replacement at 81k kilometres. Japanese Spec Miata’s in this condition are a rare find on US shores, and a collection ready example such as this is one that shouldn’t be ignored. Get behind the wheel of this Roadster and experience how less is more when it comes to minimalist driving enthusiasm.
