Buying a right-hand-drive import
Right-hand drive is a vehicle layout, not a separate import exemption. In the United States, a right-hand-drive car still has to qualify under the normal federal import path, usually the 25-year rule for nonconforming JDM vehicles. In Canada, the federal import threshold is generally 15 years, but provincial registration and inspection rules still matter.
This transactional page keeps the shopping intent here. For the legal and ownership context, read the right-hand-drive topic guide.

FAQ
Right-hand-drive buying questions
- Are right-hand-drive cars legal in the United States?
- There is no US federal ban on right-hand-drive layout by itself. The vehicle still has to be legally imported: most JDM imports use the 25-year FMVSS exemption, while newer nonconforming vehicles need a Registered Importer or another narrow exemption. State title, inspection, insurance, and emissions requirements still apply after federal import clearance.
- Are right-hand-drive cars legal in Canada?
- At the federal import level, Canada generally treats vehicles older than 15 years as outside Motor Vehicle Safety Act import regulation, but provinces handle registration and inspection. Quebec is the major exception for RHD buyers because it restricts registering right-hand-drive vehicles less than 25 years old, with limited exceptions.
- Why are most JDM cars right-hand drive?
- Japan drives on the left side of the road, so Japan-market vehicles are built with the steering wheel on the right. That is why most Japanese domestic market imports are factory right-hand-drive cars rather than converted left-hand-drive cars.
- Does JDMBUYSELL filter by steering position?
- Not as a separate database field today. This page intentionally presents the live JDM marketplace as a right-hand-drive shopping surface because Japan-market inventory is inherently RHD in normal production. Check each listing description, photos, and import documents before buying.
