Smart buyer checklist

Treat this as two groups. Required items protect you from payment loss and fraud — if a seller resists any of them, walk away. Ideal items help you assess the car's condition; when one is missing, factor it into your risk and your offer rather than treating it as automatic fraud.

Required fraud and payment-loss prevention

  • Confirm title status. Clean, salvage, rebuilt, or no title — and the title's jurisdiction — should be clear before you wire.
  • Confirm the car is importable to your location. That's your homework, not the seller's; if the import path is unclear, step back and verify before paying.
  • Read the bill of sale before you wire. "As-is" with no warranty is normal; anything that removes inspection or payment protections is a red flag.
  • Use a third-party escrow service; never wire to a personal account. For dealer sales, a wire to the business account named on the invoice is normal; for private-party sales, use escrow.

Ideal vehicle-condition diligence; factor missing items into risk and price

  • Ask for the export certificate. If the car was exported from Japan recently, the deregistration document can help confirm provenance and timing. If unavailable: certificates for older imports are often filed away, so absence is a risk signal, not automatic fraud.
  • Ask for underbody, engine bay, and rear-quarter photos. Those areas reveal rust and repair work that hero shots can hide.If unavailable: the car may still be in transit or storage; review existing media and ask for fresh shots once it's accessible.
  • Consider a third-party pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A specialist inspection can catch issues that change the price. If unavailable: a PPI is often not feasible while the car is still overseas, so price the added uncertainty instead of treating it as proof of fraud.

you in your seat, to a new high that now provided a plethora of features not often found in other coupes at the time. A full drop-top, plentiful power features and a subtle and distinct look that flies under the radar, this new model Soarer is the perfect fit for those looking to get into a JDM coupe that doesn’t sacrifice modern features. With no options for an inline six like the Soarers before it, you’ll find sitting under the hood is the 3UZ-FE. From the family of Toyota produced V8’s that rightfully earned their reputation for their reliability, the 3UZ in this example produces “275” HP with the help of VVTI and a DOHC setup. Power is sufficient enough in this drop-top coupe to reach 0-6o in just 6 seconds, showing that Toyota could stuff all the features they liked in a coupe and wouldn’t forget their lineage of sportiness that was offered in their other 2 door sports cars. With a more modern engine also comes a more modern method of getting this power to the ground, Toyota also picked a 5 speed auto as standard in the Soarer that helped to give better fuel economy and more comfortable shifts. Inside, it’s easy to forget the age of this Toyota. The Soarer features one of the more lengthy lists of features that were offered in a JDM coupe at the time. From the drivers seat, you’ll find the drop-top is fully power operated with the brief push of a button, the leather seats are heated, and fully power adjustable with programmable presets for up to 2 different drivers as well as settings for 2 different passengers. Cruise control is set with the push of a button for lengthy highway cruises. Storage cubbies like the coin holder, cup holders, and glovebox open and close whisper quiet. Digital climate controls are easy to read and operate, a Toyota installed radar sensor helps with parking in tight spaces and finally, heated power adjusting and folding mirrors show that this driver’s car could be enjoyed in all seasons. Outside, the Z40 Soarer hasn’t strayed from the subtle and good looks the Z30 had before it. The smooth and understated design of this new Soarer avoids sharp angles or edges and were all finished in simple OEM colors like this Pearl White that fit the vehicle like a well fitted suit. With the exception of Work Gnosis GH3 wheels, this Soarer is completely stock on the exterior and presented as it were from the showroom floor with no modifications or aftermarket aero to shout for attention. Fully serviced, our team has performed all the regular maintenance and service work needed to feel at ease driving this 2 door on the road. We’ve performed as standard an oil change, changed the oil filter and air filter, installed a new battery, all fluids checked and replaced as needed, replaced the tires all around, replaced valve cover gaskets, installed new tie rods, replaced brake pads in the rear, and replaced spark plugs. This new generation of Soarer is the definition of a modern classic. Despite it’s age, features are modern enough to feel at home with even new cars of today, power supplied from the 3UZ keeps it up to speed with the likes of newer sports cars ahead of it, and a timeless look leaves room for those looking to modify it and sits opulently for those who want to admire it. Thanks to a shared chassis with the SC430 here in the US, this Soarer is easy to service, find parts for and keep going for many years to come.
