) and set off by a factory spoiler, a fun and functional spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, and 16″ WEDS alloys. The cosmetics are factory fresh and are in good shape overall, save for a few minor chips and dings. Best of all, this terrific turbodiesel has only 127k verified and documented miles on the clock, which is impressive considering most stateside examples have traversed past the 200k mile mark at this point. This Surf can hang with the best of them on your morning commute, but also has an exceptionally capable 4WD system if you need to traverse off the beaten path. Stylish, handsome, spritely, and simple to service, this Surf is a superb Japanese Classic! The interior is finished in a plush tan cloth, and for being 25 years young, we find the overall fit and finish impressive for its age. The upholstery is a bit softer and more supple than the corduroy cloth spec’d in previous N185 models, and the upholstery shows no discernible rips, tears, or stains except for some minor driver’s bolster wear. The same can be said for the condition of the carpets, which have been protected over the years by a set of snazzy factory floormats. The dash is tight and tidy as well, lacking major cracks, fading, or distortion. The center stack frames a redesigned digital automatic climate control display. Ripe with cold A/C, and hot heat for your front and rear passengers, it’s easy to use and ideal for seasonal climates. Adjacent to the HVAC, the optional OEM audio displays clearly and works like a charm. Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors are all in good working order. For outdoorsy types, you can unfurl the rear window to give your passengers a real open-air experience. The rear bench is versatile. Unlike our US market examples, this one has the option to slightly recline, and it can split-fold into a flat loading surface if you need more cargo space. The door cards have resisted the rigors of daily wear and tear to boot. That’s not to say this is a perfect cabin, as 25 years of use have yielded some wear to the driver’s door armrest. Still, the condition is in far above average shape, and the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets have been retained for good measure! Under the hood is a powerplant with unique driving dynamics, top-tier fuel efficiency, and best of all, it was given a green light from our service staff here at the dealership. This 1KD-FTV is fresh off a recent service, and prospective purchasers should be delighted to know that these Surfs are easily serviced with common 4Runner parts. To start, 2 new 12V batteries were installed to aid ignition, and a new fuel filter and engine air filter were installed as part of our tune-up. A new accessory belt was chucked in so that the electronics remain properly powered. The 1KD-FTV is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts like a champ, and the pilot can choose to send power to the rear axle or both, depending on the road conditions. We serviced the driveline by performing fluid exchanges on the front and rear differential, new axle seals, and front CV axles. We’re proud to report that everything feels solid as a rock. If traveling off the beaten path, the 4WD system can be engaged on the fly, and a center locker and low range can be utilized when it’s hard to find grip. This rig sails up to highway speeds when on pavement without breaking a sweat, and can slow down with confidence thanks to standard ABS. The pedal feel was improved with a brake fluid flush, as well. The power steering is direct and was given a heavy refresh. One of our trained techs rebuilt the rack and pump, flushed in new fluid, and replaced the steering rack bushings and boots with new units. We also performed a host of suspension upgrades. Adventurous types will love the extra 2.5″ of ground clearance provided by the brand new Eibach lift kit. New front upper control arms, front upper and lower ball joints, and front sway bar end links were replaced at the same time. The rear was rehabbed with new upper and lower control arms and rear sway bar end links. After we mounted and balanced the new 33″ Falken rubber at each corner, a proper alignment was to be dialed in. New inner and outer tie rods assist with buttery smooth adjustments, and this terrific truck tracks straight as an arrow. With all these new parts, she rides like a dream, and we think the new American owner will agree.
