Aimed directly at the Subaru Legacy and Nissan Stagea, Toyota tried their hand at the turbo estate segment and emerged victorious. This Crown Athlete V exemplifies everything we love about the brand, as it stands as a true testament to their dominance in the late 1990’s. Those who know, know, and this wagon’s understated styling, top-tier 1JZ-GTE performance, and remarkable comfort make it a Japanese Classic like no other. Our 2000 has a few OEM optional niceties a

nd perks, and the Frost White over Silver Metallic (2FQ) exterior is set off by an OEM optional 3 piece lip kit, a factory rear spoiler, and factory optional BBS wheels. Save for a few scratches, dings, and blemishes, the tricoat paintwork is in good shape overall, and Toyota diehards will know the 90k verified and documented miles on the clock are as good as gold. Unique, capable, and surprisingly sporty, these wagons drive unlike anything else on the market, and with an abundance of luxury features inside, this Crown would feel right at home driving the family around in the 21st century. Safe, practical, and deceivingly quick, we can’t praise the Crown’s 11th iteration enough! The interior matches the Crown’s aesthetic to a T, plain and simple. It’s fashioned in premium materials, boasts a full slate of power amenities, and even has a few bells and whistles to stand out from your run-of-the-mill Camry or Avalon. Access is made more seamless thanks to functional keyless entry. The seats are fashioned in a durable tan cloth, and the driver benefits from power-adjustable seating up front. Even the rear bench power reclines to maximize comfort for your passengers. The tan upholstery is in good shape, soft to the touch, and devoid of any unwanted staining or holes apart from two light blemishes on the A-pillars. Up front, the vinyl dash is free of cracks, fading, or UV damage and houses dual front and side SRS airbags to maximize safety. The center stack features a fashionable factory control center, with dual-zone climate control and premium OEM touch screen audio. The screen has dimmed slightly over the years, but controls are still responsive and easy to read. The A/C and heat work well, and heated side mirrors are on hand to assist during those chilly mornings. Perhaps our favorite feature is the oscillating center vents, which distribute airflow across the cabin. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a power sunroof retracts at a moment’s notice. In true Toyota fashion, functional power windows, power locks, and electronic folding heated side mirrors work like a charm. To maximize functionality and cargo capacity, the rear bench folds flat, and larger items can be placed in the cargo hold. A cargo separator and security cover were retained from overseas, too. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets are clean. Overall, it’s clear this Crown was well cared for in a prior life, and we retained the carpet floor mats, boot mat, the owner’s manual, and maintenance booklets to further protect your precious investment! It even has an extra key! Engineered in collaboration with Yamaha, there’s a reason why the 1JZ-GTE under the hood is so good. It packs a huge punch, yet it’s easy to service, and parts are abundant thanks to the modularity of Toyota’s JZ platform. Better yet, our trained technicians have pampered this one with a comprehensive recent service. An oil and filter service was performed, and we installed a new valve cover gasket and half moon seals to keep that fluid internal. A new air filter was sourced so that the 1J can breathe freely, and the 2.5L is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. A transmission service was performed, and this gearbox is responsive and smooth. It sends power to the rear wheels, as a proper sport wagon should. It’s kind of scary how quick this estate is, and it makes short work of freeway onramps. A Cusco strut tower brace ties the chassis together, and the suspension is predictable and refined. New lower ball joints, right inner and outer tie rods, and new front caster arm bushings give it a refresh. The ABS brakes feel confident, and the lightweight BBS are wrapped in new rubber so that you can maintain grip for tens of thousands of miles to come. The power steering is light and on point, and the steering wheel shift buttons are on hand to spice up your commute. Freshly aligned, it tracks straight as an arrow. Turn key and ready to roll, this ride would make for a family hauler that can be daily driven with ease, yet can also light up the rear tires at will!
