Exterior Overview
Universally loved, the 4Runner and Hilux Surf are all-around performers. Through extreme weather and adverse road conditions, these trusty trucks always deliver. This 2000 is a fine example of Toyota’s commitment to safety, reliability, and low cost of ownership. Finished in a fresh coat of Pepper White (850), this rig is adorned by refinished factory alloys, OEM rainguards, a stylish OEM spoiler, and an aggressive OEM spare tire swingarm. The front bumper was noted as previously replaced in Japan, and aside from a few minor imperfections, the paint shows well overall. Even better, this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 101k verified and documented miles on the clock, this Hilux is barely broken in. Turn key and ready to roll, this Japanese Classic would be a fun family ferry, cool campsite companion, or brash bounding beach cruiser.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in well above average shape. It’s intuitively designed, ergonomic, and includes a few upgrades. For starters, a modern Panasonic headunit pipes in the tunes and even includes Bluetooth integration so you can keep your eyes on the road ahead. Toyota placed more emphasis on safety for this third-generation design, and made dual SRS airbags and ABS standard equipment. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good overall shape. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column to find the ideal seating position, and these optional seats include adjustable lumbar support. Power windows, mirrors, rear glass, and electric locks all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The automatic climate system is simple to operate, and cold A/C and piping hot heat are on hand for those living in seasonal climates. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a massive OEM moonroof tilts and power retracts. The OEM field monitor is directly next to the moonroof controls. Should you lose cell service, it relays information about the outside conditions to anyone within the cabin. The gray upholstery has survived the past 25 years without sustaining major damage. The durable cloth material is mirrored in the door cards, which are in equally good nick. Rear occupants can find the optimal seating position thanks to 4-way reclining seat backs and the rear bench can also split fold and tumble forward to accommodate larger cargo. The headliner is in good shape, as are the carpets, aside from some light stains. New hatch struts were installed so that cargo loading is a stress free affair. Aside from some misalignment of the trim around the climate control unit, it’s hard to critique this cabin, and even the maintenance booklet and OEM carpet floor mats are included with the purchase of this Surf.
Mechanical Overview
The 3RZ-FE engine is a real gem. It’s tough, easy to service, and designed to last forever. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L chugs to life immediately courtesy of a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs were installed as part of our tuneup. To keep all that fresh oil internal to the engine, we replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. The 3RZ pulls hard to redline and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. The auto shifts like a champ and benefits from a transmission fluid service. The pilot can engage the 4WD system on the fly, and a center locker and low range are available for your off-road escapades. This Hilux gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat and is a comfortable cruiser. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and new front lower control arms and front lower ball joints were installed prior to its state safety inspection. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and the braking system has been improved with new front brake pads and rotors. The factory alloys are wrapped in brand-new Falken rubber and the Surf was freshly aligned. The new tires look mean, quell road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
