Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf features unmatched durability, world-class off-road capabilities, all in a midsize body-on-frame platform. This 1999 is the top trim model, the SSR-G. Well-equipped, the spacious cabin has room for kids, friends, and camping gear. The exterior is mighty handsome too, and is finished in a fresh coat of Apex Silver (A31). Aside from a few slight imperfections the new paint looks swell overall. This rig includes a brand new 2.5″ Eibach lift and is adorned by OEM raingards, a stylish factory rear spoiler, an aggressive OEM spare tire swingarm, and refinished BERG alloys wrapped in rugged 33″ Falken rubber. Fresh off a recent service, this turnkey 4×4 boasts a mere 127k verified and documented miles on the clock. Powered by the same reliable V6 sold in the US, this five-seater has tons of life left in it! Ideal for adventurous types, nature enthusiasts, and dedicated Toyota die-hards, these SUVs appeal to almost everyone. Safe, inexpensive to operate, and collectible Japanese Classics like these can be daily driven year-round and enjoyed as an everyday treat!
Interior Overview
The interior is spacious and nicely optioned. The center stack looks more modern thanks to a classy Eclipse touchscreen radio upgrade. Tunes flow through the cabin, and located above is the optional digital automatic climate control system. The heat is nice and toasty, and the air conditioner is functional and primed for the summer ahead. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard for those riding up front. We did want to note that in front of the gauge cluster, there is a tiny bit of lifting of the dash, but it’s hardly noticeable from both inside and out. To make daily use more comfortable, power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion. The rear glass can also power down to add some supplemental airflow to the cabin. There is even a wall plug to charge your accessories located to the left of the steering wheel. Located by the map light, an optional OEM field monitor displays information about the outside conditions to those within the cabin, should you lose cell service. The tan upholstery is in fine shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The driver can find the ideal driving position with a standard adjustable steering column and optional manual lumbar support integrated into the seat. Rear occupants can enjoy 4-way adjustable seatbacks, which were not offered in our stateside 4Runners. Another rare option not seen in the US is the drop-down rear under mirror. When in reverse, it pops out of the spoiler to deliver a view of the rear bumper, which helps you get this lifted beast in and out of tighter parking spaces. The carpets and headliner are in good shape aside from some light soiling, and the door cards have withstood the past nearly three decades without sustaining major damage. Aside from a non-functional sunroof, there is little to complain about inside the Surf, and even the maintenance booklets are included with the purchase of this SUV!
Mechanical Overview
The frame, running gear, and engine were all offered here in the US, so keeping this truck on the road is as easy as pie. Americans have logged tons of miles on this durable 5VZ-FE V6, and this one has tons of life left in it. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L springs to life courtesy of a new 12v battery. A proper tune-up was in order, and we immediately swapped in new spark plugs, a new fuel filter, and a new engine air cleaner when it got on the lift. To keep all that new 5W-30 internal to the 5VZ, one of our trained techs installed new valve cover gaskets and also replaced the cam plugs and half moon seals. The quad cam mill is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts like a champ. The pilot can choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and when the going gets tough, a low range and center locking differential are on hand and ready to be engaged. It gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat, and when you need to slow down, new front brake pads and rotors have you covered. In case you happen to encounter snow or ice, ABS is standard equipment in the third gen. The long wheelbase is key for high-speed stability, and the new inverted suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. One of our team members refreshed the suspension with an Eibach lift kit, and we also installed new front lower control arms, front sway bar links, front lower ball joints, and rear upper and lower control arms. The platform was aligned so it tracks straight as an arrow, and the power steering system was bolstered by new steering rack bushings. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 33″ Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. As nice as this Surf looks, it drives even better, and we know the new American owner is going to be proud of their new Toyota!
