The value offered by the 90 Series Prado is tough to match. This 1998 TX Limited is a superb example of this midsize platform, and this example has logged a meager 47k verified and documented miles since it rolled off the assembly line. Powered by the same reliable 2.7L engine sold in the US under the hood of the 4Runner and Tacoma, this freshly serviced body-on-frame beast is barely broken in. Finished in a classic Millennium Silver (K73) this terrific Toyota is adorned by refinished OEM alloys, an OEM bashbar, and chrome mirror caps and door handles. The paint is in good nick aside from some normal dings, chips, and scratches associated with normal use. Turn key and ready to rock, this spacious and safe Land Cruiser would make for a functional family hauler, cool campsite companion, or wicked weekend war horse. A Japanese Classic down to its bones, this capable and collectible Cruiser does everything well!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in decent shape and comes with a host of factory upgrades and electric equipment. Access inside is made more seamless thanks to functional keyless entry. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. Atop it, mounted front and center on the dash, is an OEM optional field monitor. This unit delivers information about the outside conditions to those in the cabin, should you lose cell service. Below, the OEM audio resides. Clean and crisp, it fills the cockpit with sounds and is loud enough to sufficiently drown out the kids. Below that is the automatic climate control system. Intuitive to operate, the system can mix piping hot heat or cool A/C, delivering relief for those living in seasonal climates. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a massive panoramic moonroof can retract and tilt, the rear quarter glass can butterfly outward, and electric side windows work like a charm. Other convenience items include working power folding mirrors and power locks. With room for eight, this SUV is ideal for ferrying around friends and family. The blue and gray upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split, fold, and slide forward, and the rear jump seats tuck away neatly against the D-pillar. The headliner and door cards are in good shape, and aside from some light carpet stains, it’s hard to complain about this Prado’s guts. It even includes the owner’s manual, which is safely stowed away in the glove box!
Mechanical Overview
Sharing a frame with the 4Runner, parts, service, and options to modify are plentiful. Powering this trusty steed is Toyota’s venerable 3RZ-FE, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. The 2.7L churns to life courtesy of a new 12V battery. A proper tune-up was in order, and we installed new spark plugs, a new fuel filter, and a new engine air filter. So that the oil level stays full, one of our trained technicians installed a new valve cover gasket and addressed an oil leak by replacing the distributor o-ring. The four banger is mated to a stout automatic transmission. It shifts properly and funnels torque through a full-time 4WD system. For trips up the trails, sand and snow, a low range and center locking differential can be engaged. It gets up to highway speeds with ease and is a comfortable interstate cruiser. The ride quality is decent, and new front shocks, front sway bar bushings, and rear upper control arms have been replaced prior to its successful state safety inspection. The ABS brakes do a swell job of slowing the heavyweight down, and the power steering is light, on point, and easy to articulate. Lastly, we wrapped the OEM wheels with brand new 31″ Falken tires. Freshly aligned, new rubber looks mean, quiets road noise, and thanks to a fresh alignment, should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
