Exterior Overview
Nissan’s award winning run in the late nineties was spearheaded by models like the R34 Skyline, but we think the Stagea deserves its spot on the podium too. Sharing nearly the same turbocharged drivetrain, this Stagea RS Four V is everything we love about Nissan performance wrapped into a practical estate chassis. Best of all, this RB-powered wagon is easy to modify and maintain! Finished in Sonic Silver (KR4) this 1998 Dayz edition is set off by OEM optional front and rear bumpers, a factory rear spoiler, and factory rainguards. BC coilovers shore up any unwanted wheel gap on this AWD hauler, and NISMO fender markers give this wagon an OEM plus aesthetic. For a 25 year old Nissan, the 116k verified and documented miles on the clock are equally as impressive, and this family hauler turns plenty of heads to those in the know. In above average shape overall, this RS Four shows just a few dings and chips from daily use, and has the benefit of a fresh recent service in-house. Couple that with a fire breathing RB under the bonnet, and you have a recipe for a certified Japanese Classic.
Interior Overview
The exterior is stylish, but the interior is a highlight of this lovely estate. The fit and finish is above average, the materials were clearly well cared for in a prior life, and there’s a massive cargo hold in the rear for hauling luggage, pets, or other goodies. Access to the cabin is made seamless with factory keyless entry, and to ensure you’re never caught in a tight spot, three spare keys are included. Trimmed in a slick, patterned cloth, the seating surfaces are clean, save for some minor bolster wear on the driver’s side. Optimized for safety and comfort, the cabom houses dual front and side SRS airbags, and the center stack is easy to navigate, with automatic climate control and upgraded Kenwood audio. With Bluetooth functionality, you’ll be set to pump in your tunes from day one. Primed for the warmer months ahead, the A/C blows cold on command, and sound quality is above average overall. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column for some extra comfort behind the wheel. Power windows, mirrors, and locks work as advertised, and the side mirrors even electronically fold to give this wagon a more compact profile. The rear bench is about the most spacious we’ve seen in one of these old Nissans, and the seatbacks can fold flat if you need to pile boxes of performance upgrades in the rear. The headliner is tight and tidy, and the factory carpet has been protected over the years with a set of OEM floormats. If you can see past some wear beneath the steering wheel cover, and a couple of scuffs on the headliner, there’s little to complain about as a whole.
Mechanical Overview
The RB25DET NEO under the bonnet is stout in its own right, but it’s the maintenance we’ve performed here in house that make this a truly valuable unit! This 2.5T is fresh off an oil and filter service, and we chucked in a new 12v battery so it starts up the first time, every time. We installed a new timing belt and water pump kit, and flushed in new coolant to keep operating temperatures happy. A couple of pesky oil leaks were tended to, and we replaced the oil cooler gasket to keep all the lubricant internal. A new engine air filter keeps any unwanted contaminants out of the RB, and it accelerates rapidly up to highway speeds. With the maintenance performed, this Stagea’s Skyline DNA gets it right up to redline, and a Fujitsubo exhaust amplifies the exhaust note just the right amount. An automatic transmission makes quick work of getting power to all four wheels. Handling is better than you’d expect from an estate of this size, and we replaced the front swaybar links to shore up the cornering a bit. With the BC coilovers installed, it gobbles up backroad twists and turns, and the ABS brakes engage rapidly. Grip is handled by four nearly new all-season tires. Turn-key and ready to rock, this avant is road trip ready and would be a killer year-round daily driver!
