This 1998 VX Limited is a cure-all for those concerns, with legendary Land Cruiser durability and a fuel-sipping turbodiesel powerplant. Best of all, this one comes pre-built, ready to overland with a factory Active Vacation package.
Exterior Overview
The 100 series Land Cruiser is one of our best selling models, and truth be told its hard to find any shortcomings with the platform. It’s overbuilt, comfortable, and more than capable on and off pavement. Opting for the gasoline V8 engine has its perks, but more often than not you’ll find yourself tethered to the gas pump instead of exploring the great outdoors. This 1998 VX Limited is a cure-all for those concerns, with legendary Land Cruiser durability and a fuel-sipping turbodiesel powerplant. Best of all, this one comes pre-built, ready to overland with a factory Active Vacation package. Fresh off a recent service, this White Pearl (057) Cruiser is set off by an OEM optional front grille, a factory bug deflector, and an upgraded Warn VR evo8 winch to pull your buddies out of a ditch. Passionate outdoorsmen shouldn’t be worried about cosmetics; only a few small chips and dings reside in the paintwork. Best of all, the 128k miles on the clock are verified, and this Cruiser has just aced a state safety inspection. Clean, creative, and committed to crushing terrain, this terrific Toyota truly has it all!
Interior Overview
The interior complements the exterior in many ways. It’s well constructed, comfortable, and the plush tan cloth is in great shape and almost feels like velour. The dash houses dual SRS airbags and a factory touch screen, which seamlessly integrates dual zone climate control and OEM audio. The display is in above average condition for being 25 years young and helps cycle ice-cold A/C and hot heat throughout the cabin. For those chilly winter mornings, heat can also be funneled through the floorboards into the rear of the cabin. The upholstery is tight and tidy across both rows of seating, and save for a few light carpet stains it’s hard to scrutinize overall. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and some additional lumbar support to dial in optimal comfort behind the wheel. The middle row can stow forward for extra cargo space, and the Active Vacation package can transform the rear of the cabin into a sleeping platform for weekend glamping excursions. Even an OEM optional camping stove and sink are included! Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors aid accessibility tremendously, and the cabin is free of any excessive wear and tear save for some cracks on the woodgrain steering wheel. To protect your investment, the previous owner included the winch controller, original owner’s manuals, and additional factory literature, clear indicators this Cruiser was well cared for in a prior life!
Mechanical Overview
Toyota’s been known to engineer some excellent diesel drivetrains. Efficient, torquey, and easy to service, we’re big fans of these 4.2l 6 pots and this intercooled 1HD-FTE may be the best layout we’ve seen! The 24v powerplant springs to life care of 2 new 12v batteries. We exchanged the old fuel filter element for a brand new one and installed a new engine air filter to keep contaminants out of your combustion chamber. Despite lacking a bit of displacement over its V8 counterpart, the I6 doesn’t feel down on power in the least bit, and actually offers a more rewarding driving experience with abundant midrange torque. An automatic transmission and dual-range transfer case help put the power down to all four wheels, and an optional rear locking differential was also spec’d on this rare cruiser. Even less common is its functionality, as it engages rapidly, benefits from a new pinion seal, and works well alongside a standard center locking differential. The suspension was rehabbed and even upgraded, with all new Eibach shocks. To make the most of the updated suspension, we also installed new front upper control arms, including new ball joints that get the drivetrain safety compliant. New rear upper and lower control arms aid handling, and we installed new front swaybar endlinks as a final safety measure. This loaded rig cruises comfortably over all surfaces, and lightweight power steering promotes maneuverability, after a fresh four wheel alignment. The stock alloys look factory fresh on this Cruiser, and to help get you off the beaten path they’re wrapped in all new rubber. Efficient, functional, and fun, what more could you possibly want out of a Toyota?
