Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf and 4Runner models are prized midsize SUVs. Reliable, tough, and inexpensive to operate, Toyota sold these rigs in droves. This 1997 is high on style with its LED tail lamps, 2″ lift, a satoshi style grille, quad exhaust, 16″ refinished alloys, and meaty 33″ rubber. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scrapes, the one-off Java Black Pearl (18L) paint is in fine shape, and this terrific Toyota is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a mere 132k verified and documented miles on the clock, this SSR-X is barely broken in. Perfect as a trusty kid hauler, wicked weekend warrior, or durable year-round daily driver, this Japanese Classic is ready and eager to perform. Our best-selling platform for a million reasons and counting, this Japanese Classic can be yours today.
Interior Overview
The cabin is ergonomic, well-optioned, and in good shape overall. A MOMO woodgrain steering wheel classes up the cabin, and feels good in the palms of your hands. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and the passenger can rest easy knowing
they have
an SRS airbag. The center stack is
close by
and includes a classy touchscreen Kenwood headunit with integrated Bluetooth for hands-free use. Above is an automatic climate control system offering cool A/C and piping hot heat. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a massive moonroof tilts and retracts, and the side windows and rear glass power down quickly. By the moonroof controls, an OEM Field monitor resides. It displays info about
the outside conditions,
should cell service be lost. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power mirrors and power locks also function, which improves daily use. The seats were protected by covers in a prior life and are in above-average shape, and the door cards have been modified with leather inserts. The headliner is in good shape, and aside from some damaged climate vents and carpet stains obscured by some OEM carpet mats, it’s really hard to nitpick the condition of this stellar surf.
Mechanical Overview
For those who might be motivated by ease of service and parts availability, this Surf is for you. The 3RZ-FE powering this unit was sold here in our US 4Runners, and this one is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new 12V battery aids ignition, and we gave the four-banger a proper tune-up. New spark plugs, wires, a new engine air filter, and a new fuel filter were all replaced as soon as it got on the lift. To keep the oil level full, we replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. We also replaced the distributor seal for good measure and installed a new cap and rotor. The 2.7L pulls hard to redline and feeds power through a stout automatic. It sends power to the rear wheels or all four, depending on the driver’s preference. There is a low range for off-road excursions, and it’s simple to engage. The suspension offers tons of ground clearance and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. New rear lower shock bushings were replaced before this truck passed its VA state safety inspection, and it feels predictable, even at higher speeds. The power steering is direct and on point, and the ABS brakes slow down this midsize SUV with ease. We slapped a set of 33″ Falken all-terrains on and aligned the Surf for good measure. Turn key and ready to go, this SUV is a bona fide killer buy!
