The Mitsubishi Delica was originally never offered for sale to the US market, but in the mid 2010’s when the ever popular “L300” variant became legal to import stateside via the 25-year rule, Delicas took American shores by storm. In 1994, the Delica underwent a major overhaul as Mitsubishi rolled out the fourth generation “L400” variant. Marketed to the Japanese as the Delica “Space Gear” the L400 did away with the boxy bodywork of previous generations in favor of bubbly, rounded edges throughout the chassis. Both body styles remained in production throughout the 90’s, and Japanese buyers still had the ability to purchase the previous generation if they preferred the engine down low and the fog lights up high. Powered by Mitsubishi’s iconic 4M40 Turbo-Diesel engine, this 1997 Delica, offered in Super exceed “Chamonix” trim is a perfect choice for overlanders and road trippers alike! This Van has just 90,277 miles on it (145,287 kilometers), and the 2.8L Turbo-Diesel fires right up and chugs along! The Chamonix trim was marketed as a cold-weather ready package and included useful goodies such as a rear LSD, high amperage alternator, larger battery, and a more insulated roof to help regulate cabin temperatures. This one also comes equipped with the special “Crystallite moon roof” which has 5 total sections allowing plenty of light into the cabin. For those looking to use this Delica as an overlanding vehicle, the interior amenities and overall room in the cabin is certainly impressive. One look at the exterior and you instantly know what this van is about, the outside is finished in a light silver metallic duo-tone. On the outside of this quirky van, no modifications have defiled its unique nature. The exterior looks excellent, save for a minor scuff on the front left bumper. 15 inch OEM alloy wheels are wrapped in healthy Yokohama Geolander M/T tires and are ready to hit the road. The Interior is in fantastic condition, and the light gray suede cloth seats look better than most! The Driver seat shows some wear on the seat portion typical of years of hopping in and out of the vehicle, but the rest of the seats are free of any rips, tears, or major wear and are very comfortable. The rest of the interior trim is in good shape, and the dash only has one minor crack alongside the A/C Controls. Speaking of A/C, this Delica blows Cold and Hot when you need it to, and all interior accessories are fully functional and in good shape, down to the OEM temp gauge, altimeter, and displays. One minor item of note is the stow-away cupholders, which do not stow completely flush, however they are still fully functional. A nice touch is the small trash bin at the bottom of the dash. Some choice modifications come in the form of quality of life upgrades, such as a passenger seat mounted Pioneer speaker, Pioneer adjustable sound controls, and an Eclipse AVN112M Head unit. Rear passengers also have separate access to their own climate control features and individual crystallite moonroof controls for ease of use. Pop the hood and the turbo diesel powerplant shines in all its glory. The engine fires right up and idles smoothly. Driving this Delica is certainly an experience in itself. Shifts are smooth and direct through the automatic gearbox. Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD allows you to shift between drive modes at highway speeds and a rear LSD helps put the power down on or off the road. This particular Delica even comes pre-equipped with a Tug Master tow hitch making road trips and travel even more convenient! With its unique look and 6 passenger seating, this Delica offers functionality and fun whether you plan to use it to trek across the country, or cruise backroads on the weekends.
