haring a platform with the 3rd generation 4Runner, these trucks are easy to service, yet boast increased interior space, more ground clearance, and a robust full time 4WD system.
Exterior Overview
About eight years before we received the Lexus GX in our domestic market, Japan had access to the 90 series Land Cruiser Prado. Sharing a platform with the 3rd generation 4Runner, these trucks are easy to service, yet boast increased interior space, more ground clearance, and a robust full time 4WD system. Turbodiesel powered and classically styled, this 1997 looks swell in Jewel Green/Grey (K12). It features some factory flair, with an OEM front brushguard, dual driving lamps, and OEM rainguards, and save for a few nicks, scratches, and loss of gloss in the paint, the cosmetics far surpass most 29 year old vehicles. Best of all, the 118k miles on the clock are verified and documented, and this trusty Toyota is barely broken in. Fresh off a recent service, road-tested, and turn key ready to drive, this is one reliable, efficient, and handsome Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The interior is a highlight of the 90 series, and for good reason. It boasts three rows of spacious seating, a full slate of power equipment, and durable materials which have proven themselves against the rigors of daily use and abuse. The seats are trimmed in a comfortable patterned cloth, and all three rows are free of excessive wear and tear and can comfortably seat eight passengers. The dash is in good shape, with no cracks, distortion, or fading of note. Dual SRS airbags are on hand to assist those in need, and the driver can tilt the steering column at will to gain additional comfort behind the wheel. The center stack features an easy to use automatic climate control unit, complete with cold A/C and piping hot heat ready to be funneled into the front or rear of the cabin. Adjacent to the HVAC, period correct Pioneer audio is on hand, and if you still have a collection of Mini Discs in the attic, this Prado will play them! To funnel a crisp winter breeze throughout the cabin, power windows can unfurl rapidly. Even the rear glass pops out sideways for your third row passengers. Power locks work like a charm, as do the mirrors, which fold in and out electronically. For being almost three decades old, it’s hard to scrutinize the interior. The headliner is clean, and the carpets are in good nick. Save for a damaged center console lid, this classic cockpit should keep most everyone satisfied!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE under the hood is a beast of an engine. Factory intercooled, it benefits from a slight bump in power, and this diesel champions fuel efficiency so you won’t be stuck at the pump. Fresh off a recent service, it cranks over swiftly, thanks to two new 12v batteries we installed here at the shop. As is standard procedure on all our diesel vehicles, a new fuel filter was installed, and the engine air cleaner was replaced for good measure. New accessory belts help keep the electrical system charged and to keep the 3.0 running tip top, and we installed a new valve cover gasket to keep things topped up on lubricant. The turbocharger delivers a sufficient kick down low to help maximize the diesel’s prolific torque, and a smooth shifting automatic gearbox helps put power down to all four wheels. The suspension was completely refreshed while it was up on the lift. New shocks all the way around improve the ride quality tenfold, and we also installed new rear upper and lower control arms. The steering is light and direct, and the brakes benefit from new pads and rotors up front. Freshly refinished and shod in new Falken Wildpeaks, the 16″ alloys look great on this rig, and after a fresh alignment, you’ll be covered with grip for tens of thousands of miles to come. At 29 years old, no vehicle is perfect, and we did want to note some wear, consummate with regular use, to the rear panhard bushings and front lower ball joints.
