Up for sale is a gorgeous example of one of Toyota’s most legendary sport coupes, the Celica ST205. Following the incredible success of the ST185 Celica in the World Rally Cross championship, Toyota sought to improve upon that already winning formula and update their rally ready Celica for the next generation, the ST205 GT Four. The ST205 featured a slew of upgrades over the previous generation, including an updated 2.0l turbocharged engine pumping out 240hp, a lightweight aluminum hood, redesigned suspension and brakes, and much more. The ST205 was also the model associated with Toyota’s infamous turbo restrictor scandal that earned the brand a 1 year ban from competing in rally. The Celica was available in a variety of different trims, the top-trim, turbocharged all-wheel drive GT-Four was the one to have. If you were lucky, you could get your hands on a GT Four WRC, a homologation special model with factory anti lag plumbing. While this is not a WRC edition, this is a terrific example of a well spec’d 1996 model year ST205 GT Four sure to serve the next owner well for years to come. The exterior of this Celica is a perfect testament to 90’s rally styling. Finished in a beautiful fresh coat of Toyota Super White (040), the paint shows extremely well and looks great on the iconic “bug eyed” styling of the ST205. The only modification to the exterior is an upgraded high-rise wing, donated from a later ST205 Celica. The rest has remained beautifully stock and, despite the bold styling cues has aged quite gracefully. The interior is equally as clean as the exterior and has held up incredibly well over the past 26 years. The retro-cool multicolor upholstery on the OEM seats is free of any rips, tears, or burns, and all interior dash plastics are in excellent condition. All buttons, switches, and dials work as expected and stand as a testament to Toyota’s excellent build quality in the 1990s. The sunroof is fully functional with no leaks. Absolutely no serious modifications have been made to the interior, save for a touch screen head unit and aftermarket turbo timer. Plop down behind the wheel and you’ll instantly see why this is a driver’s car, all controls are conveniently oriented towards the person piloting the vehicle. The OEM instrument cluster is fully functional and displays only 137,395 original km’s, translating to roughly 85,373 original miles it’s clear to see why everything is so immaculate. If you thought this Celica looked great, it drives even better. Pop the hood and the powerplant sits front and center. This road going rally car was equipped from the factory with Toyota’s legendary 3S-GTE engine, producing a sufficient 240whp. Coupled with the vehicles light weight and upgraded close ratio 5 speed manual transmission, this Celica gets up and goes without issue, tearing through twisty backroads with ease. The ST205 models featured a special water to air intercooler, a neat innovation that still remains ahead of its time even with most turbocharged vehicles. Turn the key and the 2.0 turbocharged inline 4 engine whirrs to life. The turbo spools up without hesitation and propels this 3SGTE to redline with ease. Shifts through the close ratio 5 speed manual gearbox are smooth and direct and make this car an absolute blast to drive around town. Purist will appreciate the fact that this engine has never been modified, and the smooth driving characteristic confirm that this is one perfectly stock Celica, turn key and ready to rip. For the discerning 90’s rally enthusiast, there’s really no better collector’s car to own than the GT Four and this is one pristine example sure to hold its value well for years to come.
