Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape and includes numerous power options and upgrades. Unlike most of these we see, the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. The driver gains access to a tilt-adjustable steering column, and the seat includes adjustable hip and lumbar support. Power windows, electric locks, and power mirrors all function in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The center stack includes a simple-to-use climate control system that pumps in cool A/C and piping hot heat. Below, a Pioneer radio upgrades pipes in the tunes and includes a USB input for your smartphone. The seats are upholstered in a blue and gray textured cloth. They are durable and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear row split folds, 4-way reclines, and tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor when additional cargo capacity is required. From the rear, you can drop the glass for easy loading, and instead of a traditional hatch, the rear uses a clamshell design. Ideal for tailgating, it supports two adults. The headliner and door cards are in good and the carpets have escaped major damage. As a whole, this cabin is in really good nick for a second-generation Surf, and even a spare key and the cargo security cover are included with the purchase of this terrific Toyota.
Mechanical Overview
This body-on-frame beast can withstand a whole lot of abuse, and the same can be said for the four-banger under the hood. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1K springs to life courtesy of two new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter and engine air filter we installed as soon as it got on the lift, and we replaced the crossover pipe due to a hairline crack. To ensure the oil level says full, we replaced the weary old valve cover gasket and half moon seals with new ones. The diesel is mated to a stout automatic gearbox. It makes good use of the prodigious low-end grunt, and gets this Hilux moving is a jiffy. It slows down quickly when called upon, thanks to a new brake booster, and the suspension offers loads of ground clearance. We improved the ride with four new shocks, new rear upper control arms, and aligned the platform so it drives straight as an arrow. A new steering damper was installed, as was an idler arm ball joint, and the system is easy to articulate. Grip is handled by four new Falken all-terrain tires. Turn key and ready to rock, this trusty steed is practical, trustworthy, and a blast to drive!
