We aren’t trying to paint with too broad of a brush here, but the Skyline really is a great car. Too often when mentioned images of Godzilla terrorizing the Touge come to mind, but the model line wasn’t all fire-breathing AWD terrors. Plenty of versions of the chassis were sold; from sedan to coupe to turbo and naturally aspirated models. This 1994 GTS sedan is a fine example of what an R33 should be, even if it’s not a hot rod. Finished in your classic Cloud White (QM1), the body looks good aside from some minor touchup paint and a few routine little scuffs, dings, and chips associated with normal use. Fresh off a recent service this smooth-riding five-seater is efficient, affordable, reliable, yet still unique. Boasting a mere 86K verified miles, this understated Japanese Classic four-door would make for an ideal daily driver or weekend cruiser and a surprising overall value.
The cabin is spacious, simple, and well designed. The view of the road ahead is clear and the overall visibility is fantastic from the cabin. Digital climate control and a Carrozzaria stereo sit front and center. Both work and are simple to operate. A tilt-adjustable column is also standard and helps to accommodate drivers of all sizes. Power windows, locks, and mirrors all work in this example, although the mirrors no longer power fold. The gray seats are still soft to the touch and comfortable on long cruises. They lack any major imperfections such as rips, stains, or tears. The door cards match and are in good nick, while the headliners and carpets have withstood the last two and a half decades quite well. That’s not to say the interior is perfect, as we did want to note a passenger-side dash crack and heavy wear on the soft-touch surfaces and plastics. Still, the bones are good and we have priced the car accordingly.
Mechanically these are more refined than you might expect. The power unit fashioned under the bonnet is Nissans’ silky RB20E. This 2.0L six-cylinder cranks over quickly thanks to a new 12V battery. Our technicians have performed an oil and filter service so that no scheduled service is required for another three-thousand mile. A new engine air filter was also fitted to ensure the RB breaths properly and returns decent fuel economy. Power is sent rearward through an automatic gearbox. It shifts as it should and sends power to the rear wheels. The transmission does have selective drive modes to maximize performance and the factory suspension is more than adequate for daily driving. The steering is direct and power-assisted and the well-balanced sedan brakes with confidence when the pedal is depressed. The OEM alloy wheels are wrapped in new all-season tires at all four corners. They will provide year-round grip and also quiet down the ride nicely.
