The Nissan Pulsar GTiR was introduced in the early 1990’s as a homologation model for Nissan’s entry into the World Rallycross Championship. Specifically designed for the “Group A” division of WRC, Nissan’s engineers wasted no time making sure this hot hatchback could hold its own against its competitors. Their formula? Take a lightweight, 3 door hatchback, add a pinch of 227hp SR20DET and a dash of All Wheel Drive, and voila! A compact rally car that could outperform its adversaries on the road and track with ease! The Pulsar GTiR came in two major trims, the RA and RB, the RA model was the “standard” trim, equipped with necessary creature comforts, such as power windows, ABS, Air conditioning, and a full stereo system. The RB however, ditched all of these in favor of race-ready weight reduction measures. This 1993 Pulsar in question is indeed an RA model and is equipped with all the necessary standard equipment needed to daily drive this awesome hot hatch. The exterior is finished in a fresh coat of Nissan 531 Vail White. The paintwork on this car is excellent and looks great on the Pulsar’s rally bred body lines. The exterior of this Pulsar has remained mostly stock. Yes, the wild hood vents and whale tail spoiler are factory equipment designed with performance in mind. Only a few choice modifications have been made to the exterior of this vehicle. A set of red mudflaps makes a bold statement against the otherwise plain white exterior, and a set of period correct Advan Racing TC wheels really round off the iconic rally inspired look of this homologation vehicle. For a 28 year old vehicle the interior has truly held up well over the years. The OEM striped cloth upholstery is in great shape on the passenger seat, rear seats, and door cards. The driver’s seat has been swapped with a “Confetti” Recaro SR3, a fitting upgrade for this performance inspired cockpit. The dash is free of any cracks or bubbling, and all interior amenities are fully functional, down to the power folding mirrors and ice-cold A/C. The OEM steering wheel has been replaced with the ever popular MOMO “Race” unit. The iconic three spoke design feels great in your hands as you pilot this hot hatch down the road. The gauge cluster displays just 167,951 verified kilometres (104,359 miles) and it’s clear this Pulsar could handle another 100k with no issue. For a two door car, the back seats are plenty spacious, and have enough room for hauling friends and family with no issue. Pop the hood and you’re greeted by the lovely 2.0 turbo SR20DET. Similar to the SR offered in the iconic 180SX, this engine setup nets a respectable 227 horsepower stock. Paired to the light weight of the vehicle, this Pulsar GTIR has no issue getting out of its own way. An aftermarket intake and front mount intercooler help the SR breathe better while making the engine bay easier to work on without the bulk of the factory top mount. Turn the key and the SR20 happily whirrs to life. An aftermarket Phoenix Power “Departure” exhaust has been installed. Not only does it look wild poking out of the rear bumper, it sounds great under load without being too over the top! The turbocharger spools with no issue, and this giddy hot hatchback loves to push you back into your seat. The 5-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly, with no grinds or pop outs, and a stout NISMO clutch does a fine job at handling performance driving. You instantly feel the full time all wheel drive working as the car stays extremely well planted throughout the corners. A Cusco front strut bar helps increase chassis rigidity and OEM rally height suspension helps the car stay planted on any terrain. If you’re looking for a rare, rally-inspired car that can handle daily duty or weekend fun, this Pulsar GTIR is the star of the show.
