The Toyota Celica ST185 was the unassuming sport coupe that put Toyota on the map in the World Rallycross Championship. Thanks to a team of dedicated European rally drivers, the ST185 Celica went on to win 3 championships and made Toyota a force to be reckoned with against dominant European manufacturers such as Lancia. While the Celica was available in a variety of different trims, the top-trim, turbocharged all wheel drive GT-Four was the one to have. This road going rally car was equipped from the factory with Toyota’s legendary 3S-GTE engine, producing a modest 200hp. Coupled with the vehicles light weight and close ratio 5 speed manual transmission, this Celica gets up and goes without issue, tearing through twisty backroads with ease. The exterior of this ST185 is a perfect testament to 90’s rally styling. Finished in a beautiful coat of Toyota black (202), the paint shines like new, and really accentuates the iconic 90’s styling. Records from Japan indicate that there has been some minor paintwork in the past. The only modifications to the exterior are a set of period-correct OZ Racing 5 spoke wheels, and a genuine Toyota Skid plate in the rear. This 90’s legend is really one that needs to be appreciated in person. The body is rust free and oozes WRC goodness from every panel. The interior is equally as clean and has held up incredibly well over the past 28 years. That should come as no surprise however, one glance at the dash and you’ll notice that this Celica has managed to cover only 66,869 verified km’s (41,550 miles!) The retro-cool multicolor upholstery is free of any rips, tears, or burns, and all interior dash plastics are in excellent condition. All buttons, switches, and dials work as expected, including the power adjustable seat bolsters, and stand as a testament to Toyota’s excellent build quality in the 1990s. A 3 spoke MOMO steering wheel replaces the clunky OEM unit, and serves as a great compliment to the cockpit style dash. Plop down behind the wheel and you’ll instantly see why this is a driver’s car, all controls are conveniently oriented towards the person piloting the vehicle. An aftermarket omoni mechanical boost gauge has been added and is fully functional and accurate. Turn the key and the 2.0 turbocharged inline 4 engine whirrs to life. The turbocharger spools up without hesitation and propels this 3SGTE to redline with ease. Shifts through the close ratio 5 speed manual gearbox are smooth and direct and make this car an absolute blast to drive around town. Modifications to the powertrain are minor, an HKS intake helps the engine breathe better, and an aftermarket exhaust system sounds wonderful as this 4 banger screams through the powerband. Inside the cockpit, an Apexi Air Fuel Controller and Blitz Boost Controller allow for even more fine tuning of the driving experience. A set of Cusco coilovers give the vehicle a lower stance and also help this all wheel drive beast stay planted in the corners. If you are looking for a rare piece of rally history in collector-status shape, this GT four is a must have for any enthusiast.
