Toyota’s craftsmanship is known worldwide for its durability and the Celsior is the pinnacle of this. Known for being able to rack up (literally) a million miles in comfort you really can’t get much better than this. Especially since this one just happens to be the F-package equipped which means it comes with all the bells and whistles you never knew you needed. Heated, massaging, reclining back seats? Check. Full audio and temperature controls from the back? Check. A fantastic color combination? Check. Finished in Jade Green Metallic (6K4) even that was a special option. The paint itself is in good shape, though it does have some etching in the clear which is rather common when you’re dealing with a 30-year-old vehicle. The body is in just as nice shape with only a few routine little door dings to report. The only thing it’s missing is matching tint on the front windows for you to have one of the best driving dailies out there. While the odo reads 77K miles they were not verified prior to leaving Japan. We don’t have much reason to believe it’s inaccurate, but if you cannot definitely prove the mileage is accurate then it’s listed as unverified for safety’s sake.
The interior fit and finish are impressive even by new car standards. It’s true what they say, you do get what you pay for, and like most of the Celsior’s that we retail the interior on this one has held up exceptionally well. While the exterior color is rare and highly prized, it’s actually the rare leather option that sets this one apart. While commonplace stateside, the Japanese are rather anti-leather due to the wear factor. Surrounded by power equipment; the driver benefits from a tilting and telescoping electric column, and both front seats are fully powered and operating as they should. Even the seat belt adjusters are powered, as well as the locks, windows, and power-folding mirrors. All these items work and are complemented by a digital climate control system and the factory audio setup. The best part is that all of these can be controlled from the back seats, just about the only thing these don’t come equipped with is a driver. The dash is in good shape, lacking any cracks or distortion and the door cards are equally nice. The Celsior is equipped with a factory steering wheel-mounted cruise control system which is clutch on long drives. An SRS driver airbag is also standard, which was not as common as you would think at the time. Overall you’re going to be hard-pressed to find a better place to spend your time cruising in.
Toyota’s range of engines in ’91 was known for industry-leading efficiency and reliability. Chosen to launch Toyota’s all-out attack on the Germans, this 1UZ-FE was designed as the brand’s crown-jewel for its power production and durability. The 4 liter V8 is near-silent and quickly churns to life thanks to a new 12V battery. With its shockingly low vibration nature, and benefiting from a new air filter, the 1UZ should be good to go for quite some time to come. It sends power to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox, and it shifts like butter. The rear airbags were leaking which is a common issue with these, so we went ahead and swapped it over to a more traditional strut and spring setup. We did that for two reasons; it has a tendency to ride a bit better but more importantly, it’s an easier system to service that has a tendency to last longer under routine use. Or if you decided that you want to take more of a stance approach instead of a daily driver this makes it easier to swap out with coilovers or an adjustable air system. Now that the entire system has been replaced the car rides like a dream. The brakes slow this heavy sedan down safely and the light, power-assisted steering makes these feel a lot lighter than they are. Fresh rubber all around makes sure you’ve got plenty of grip regardless of the weather and also helps to quiet down the ride. A new air filter also helps the big V8 breathe a bit easier and will hopefully help out a little in the fuel economy department. The Celsior really is one of the best bang for the buck cars on the road today. Jammed pack with luxury amenities wrapped up in a timeless design, it really doesn’t get much better than this.
