The NA chassis Mazda Roadster is iconic. It’s the car that gets non-car enthusiasts into cars. It’s incredibly easy to work on and fuel efficient with incredible driving dynamics to boot. If you’re into cars, it’s almost guaranteed that at one point in time you’ve wanted a Miata, driven a Miata and grinned, or at least entertained the idea of adding one to your fleet. While Mazda has been producing the MX5 Miata in the states since 1990, North American climates haven’t exactly been the kindest to these classic roadsters, making it near impossible to find a clean North American market example that hasn’t fallen victim to rust and corrosion issues. This is where the Japanese market comes in. These JDM “Eunos Roadsters” tend to have lower mileage and cleaner bodies than most USDM Miatas and come with some choice JDM specific features. This particular 1990 model year “NA6CE” Eunos Roadster is an extremely clean example, optioned from the factory in base trim with Mazda’s durable 1.6l 4 cylinder powerplant and 5 speed manual transmission. With only 62530 original km on the chassis (38k verified miles!) this Roadster is certainly a rare find and will undoubtedly serve the next owner well for years to come. The exterior on this one is near flawless and is a fantastic example of the brand’s most iconic two-seater. With a fresh respray of Mazda “Silver Stone” (3L) paint, this Miata is a definite head turner, especially with the OEM hard top! The exterior has remained largely untouched, aside from a set of aftermarket tail lights, and 15” Panasport Pro Rally wheels that almost look as if they belong on the vehicle from the factory. A set of rare Mazdaspeed coilovers remove any unsightly wheel gap while also greatly improving handling dynamics while driving. The body is free of any dents or scratches, and looks incredible for a 31 year old vehicle. The barebones styling of the OEM interior perfectly suits this no-frills roadster and is in excellent shape. The original black cloth upholstery on the seats is free of rips, tears, or burns, and the bolstering still holds the driver in quite well. This Roadster has been modified with “tall guy” upgrades, and some foam has been removed out of the driver’s seat to better fit drivers over 6’ tall. The center console has been removed as well and replaced with a clean piece of matching black carpet. The dash is clean, with no cracking or sun fading, and all switches in the center console work as expected, including the AC. Look behind the seats and you’ll see a beefy padded roll bar. The previous owner has removed the OEM soft top, so don’t get caught in the rain! The OEM steering wheel has been replaced with a sleek 3 spoke Nardi unit. The instrument cluster and climate control have been fitted with stunning aluminum overlays, courtesy of Artworks Dewa Japan. Affixed to the lower right of the steering column are two inconspicuous buttons, the red button activates a push-start ignition, and the black button acts as a trunk release! Finding a NA Roadster interior this clean is a rare sight, and we’re sure the next owner will appreciate the flawless condition of this one. The 1.6l 4 cylinder powerplant fires right up and idles smoothly. You wouldn’t expect 113 hp to be so exhilarating, but in this lightweight chassis, it’s a suitable amount. The motor is free of any and all unnecessary aftermarket modification. In mechanically stock form, this car is a real treat. Take all the fun of a Miata, throw the steering wheel on the right, and you have a recipe for some serious driving pleasure. The motor revs happily throughout the rev range with no hiccups or hesitations. The 5-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly throughout all gears and makes this fully-involved driving experience second to none. This car makes quick work of backroad twists and turns, thanks to a set of Yokohama summer tires. Japanese Spec Miata’s in this condition are a rare find on US shores, and a collection ready example such as this is one that shouldn’t be ignored. Get behind the wheel of this Roadster and experience how less is more when it comes to minimalist driving enthusiasm.
